John: Quite obviously, switching down to 16-bit z-buffers also disables hardware acceleration...

New Results Table

Claus has setup a new results table which will allow people to post their own results. The old table file has been modified to redirect to this new table, so all the links above will still work. The new address is:

http://www.clausbrod.de/cgi-bin/view.pl/Osdm/ViewbenchResults

I will leave it to Claus to post the details about his new table and web site. Thanks Claus.

Re: New Results Table

John,

thanks for setting up the redirection, and thanks a lot for keeping the results table up to date so far!

A while ago, John and I had already discussed how to allow users to directly enter new results. When I finally got around to remodeling my web site at http://www.clausbrod.de the other day, I saw the opportunity to address this. My website now features a Wiki on OneSpace Designer Modeling (http://www.clausbrod.de/cgi-bin/view.pl/Osdm/WebHome). The cool thing about Wikis is that everybody can directly edit web pages and contribute - an ideal situation for the viewbench results table!

The new table is at http://www.clausbrod.de/cgi-bin/view.pl/Osdm/ViewbenchResults . To add your own results, proceed as follows:
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the table until you see an Edit button with a "pencil on table" icon, right above the comment box. Click this button.
  • You will be asked to log in. Either use your own account (register at http://www.clausbrod.de/cgi-bin/view.pl/TWiki/TWikiRegistration)
    or TWikiGuest (password "guest").
  • Now the table goes into edit mode. At the bottom of the table, click "Add Row".
  • Fill in the columns of the new entry with your test data, then hit "Save table".
  • Optionally, attach your measurement results (perf_viewbench_xxx file) to the TWiki page ("Attach image or document" link at the bottom of the page).

If you want, you can of course also post to this forum to let everybody know that there are new results waiting for them.

Hope you'll like this. And don't forget to check out the OSDM FAQ list on my site (http://www.clausbrod.de/cgi-bin/view.pl/Osdm/WebHome)- to which you can also freely contribute.

Cheers,

Claus

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

FYI, I have no problems running viewbench on OSD 2004 but it does not work on OSD 2005. I get the following error on 2005: "LISP error: Loading shared library failed for viewbench. "

Oops. An updated version of the viewbench code is now available at ftp://ftp.cocreate.com/sdtestpackage/viewbench/viewbench_code_osdm2005.zip.

Hi Claus,

Are you sure that ftp site isn't password protected? I had no luck getting to it.

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

Just tried it again using Filezilla and Internet Explorer - worked fine for me. I did have some problems when trying to download it from Firefox, but I believe that is due to incorrect proxy settings and/or internal firewall issues in my case. (Need to doublecheck.)

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

I can't get it to work here, either. I've tried IE 5.5 and Firefox 1.0. Perhaps it's because of our firewall, although I've had no problems with FTP with CoCreate Support in Fort Collins.

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

First, thanks for the problem reports! I discussed this with our IT team. They investigated the issue and found that ftp clients will have problems accessing ftp.cocreate.com if they are configured in "passive ftp" mode. "Active ftp" works fine.

Some background on those terms can be found at http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html or http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/protocolsftp/g/bldef_pasv.htm.

Our IT folks are now digging into the problem. As a temporary workaround, you can try to configure your favorite ftp client so that it runs in "active ftp" mode. http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/novellgroupwise/ht/setpassiveftpie.htm explains where that setting can be found in Internet Explorer. Other ftp clients probably also have configurable settings for this. I haven't found out yet whether Firefox can be reconfigured as well.

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

Hi Claus,

That worked, although for some reason clicking the link in your post still has a problem (see attached GIF). This error occurred with both passive and active.

After changing IE to active FTP, I was able to connect to:

ftp://ftp.cocreate.com/sdtestpackage/viewbench/

then copy the file viewbench_code_osdm2005.zip to my disk.

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

Hi all,

We have purchased a new 64-bit machine for CAD, and would like to benchmark it in some way so that I can give a quantitative improvement in performance over our old systems so that I can provide an ROI to justify replacing all of our CAD machines with machines like this.

I have found this thread on the benchmark tool. I have tried running the 2005 version of the tool under V14, and I get the following error:

LISP error:
Loading shared library failed for viewbench

Is there an updated version of the benchmark for V14? Thanks.

Steve

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

The problem may be that the "shared library" was compiled for 32 bit Modeling and will not run under 64 bit Modeling. We have run into this problem with some of the compiled customizations we use.

I don't know if this benchmark will help you very much. It only tests the graphics performance. I don't know if graphics speed will be affected much by a 64 bit versus a 32 bit CPU.

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

John is right: You'll need an updated DLL for the 64-bit version. I haven't gotten around to produce and upload that DLL yet.

viewbench only covers graphics, so it will give you only a very limited impression of the performance of the new system.

Re: Graphics benchmark for OneSpace Designer Modeling

The 64-bit version of viewbench for OSDM 2006 is now available from the CoCreate ftp server (ftp.cocreate.com/sdtestpackage/viewbench/viewbench_code_osdm2006_x64.zip). There's no 32-bit version yet, sorry.
