Unhappy I Feel Like an Absolute ALIEN!

What in the heck are we called?....I go to a "job" post to see what kind of Cad designer jobs might be available in the entire USA....in the majority of the listings and sites it says "Platform" as in ...you guessed it...Solidworks...Catia, Unigraphics....etc.

Does it have a choice for.."OneSpace"?? SolidDesigner??.."CoCreate"???!!!!

nnnnnnnope.....So WHAT ARE WE?????

I won the "Best Achievement in Engineering" with this stuff...and NO ONE knows what the "H" I use....I'm tired of it!

I know it's the best...I've proven it.....but..."What Are We"????

Anyone else have have this problem?

Brian

Re: I Feel Like an Absolute ALIEN!

You are not alone. I have been supporting the CoCreate applications in the USA for 17 years and have often been frustrated by the lack of awareness about them. They were often not even mentioned in surveys and reports on MCAD. We have many MEs who have tried or used other 3D Design tools but love Modeling. We joked that it was the best kept secret in the MCAD world. Now that the name has been assimilated into the PTC Creo continuum, many MEs will never know that there was once a great MCAD vendor named CoCreate.

HP MDD refers to the Mechanical Design Division at HP, which was the birthplace of SolidDesigner back in 1993 or so. At that point, MDD had already developed ME10 (2D) and ME30 (3D) software, and SolidDesigner was the latest thing.

Now, after 17 or so years, what was MDD has been through a few ownership changes and the products have been through several name changes as well. The result at this point is products that are much better with new names that are much longer...

In any case, welcome!

I started at HP's Mechanical Design Division in late 1991. At that point, the SolidDesigner project had already been running for some time. I believe the project started in 1989 or so. v1.0 was released in April 1993.

Brian, this will be of little consolation to you, but let me mention that TPKBFTMN (The Product Known By Far Too Many Names) was particularly successful in Europe, where it did achieve good popularity, whereas we always were, uhm, underrepresented in the US. So in Europe, you wouldn't feel quite that much alien...

Re: I Feel Like an Absolute ALIEN!

But in fact I think that most people decided that cocreate was NOT the best CAD product and switched? It is good at core explicit modeling but not all that competitive in other areas. Much of the technology languished throughout the 2000's while it's private owners cut costs and investment in order to button the company for sale. CREO is the future, but there again PTC will need to invest $$ and build in the explicit modeling over time. Of course, if interest in explicit modeling wains, PTC will reduce the build out of explicit functionality into CREO.

Re: I Feel Like an Absolute ALIEN!

The explicit modeling of Creo will have to compete strongly against the NX-7.5 Direct modeling for years to come. NX has gone back to some of it's roots in explicit modeling of over a decade back and brought those tools leaps ahead with more robust functions.

One would have to agree that PTC will need to put more $$$ to advance Creo beyond the CoCreate realm.
