Annotation won't update Views (only 1 user)

Hi,

we have a weird problem, and we cannot find the clue...
We occasionally have the issue that Annotation suddenly refuses to load a drawing (signal errors etc.). When we delete the roaming profile of that user, and give him a brand new profile, the problem is fixed (but our IT dept. doesn't like doing this, of course).
Now we have a user that, while trying to update any Annotation View, consequently gets the error "Action Failed (am_view_update/signal)", and when he clicks OK, the error "Cannot delete the file "C://local/temp/.........mi".
We gave him a new profile; no luck.
I login on his PC: no problems!
He logs in on my PC: View update error.
Starting OSD 15.50 or 16.00 without any customizations (both local and site): still the same problem.
Making the guy local admin: no luck.
It's probably something in the registry or roaming profile, but why only this user, even with a brand new profile??!!

Anyone any idea????
Thanks!
Regards,
Jaap

Are there some "strange" characters in the user name?

Hi,

no, just plane ascii characters, something similar to "jkramer", so not even periods or other characters.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Jaap

I've seen similar issues.
The problem was causes by one of the installed printers.
Try to remove all printers in windows and start annotation again and see if the problem went away. If so then add the printers again.
Hope this helps

Re: Annotation won't update Views (only 1 user)

I don't thinks it's a printer problem.
Q: does this only happen during update?
Q: at first update within the OSDM session?
Q: at 2nd update within the same session?
Q: does it happend when creating a new view.. the 1st one within the session?

a) I would try to use OpenFilesViews to inspect how might have opened the file
b) I would use sysinternals FileMonitor to watch $TEMP/*.mi files to see who is handling accessing that file.

Re: Annotation won't update Views (only 1 user)

Hi Reinhard and others,

OK, we've done some testing...

- uninstalling drivers: no luck...
- doing an (unsuccesfull) View update shows some stuff in OpenFilesViews and Filemonitor (see attached files). It seems to be a "sharing conflict".
- when making a new model + new drawing: Views update without problems!
- when saving the model + drawing as bundle, restarting OSD / Anno and opening the bundle: View Update gives the infamous error again
- when creating a new drawing: update Views succesfull.
- when saving this new Drawing as .mi-file, closing it, and re-opening it: View update succesful!
- after an unsuccesfull View Update, File > Open > Drawing (*.mi) results in an error, but dragging an mi-file onto the Viewport still works (we've seen that earlier with other users).

By the way, in Filemonitor, I saw a lot of lines about SVN... can Subversion have negative effects on Annotation??

Hope this may lead to a clue...
Thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
Jaap

Hi Jaap,

Have you tried to start modeling without any customization loaded?
Are you starting modeling from a script or just from the standard shortcut?

Re: Annotation won't update Views (only 1 user)

Hi John,

one of the first things we tried was disabling both the local and the central customizations, so we would have a "clean" situation. Besides that, we also tried OSD 16.00. The weird thing is that as soon as another user logs in, the problem is gone...

regards,
Jaap

Re: Annotation won't update Views (only 1 user)

Hi all,

someone just mailed me if we found a solution to the problem.
Well, yes, we found a solution, but we're still don't know the actual cause...
Here's the solution:
- uninstall all CoCreate stuff (Modeling, Modelmanager, etc.)
- delete all registry settings for CoCreatte
- make the user Local Admin
- re-install the CoCreate programs WITH THE INSTALL DVD, and not from a network source like a home made msi or so
That does the trick! Quite a lot of work with 35+ users... but the next time we'll upgrade, we're simply going to copy the CoCreate DVD 20 or 40 times. Much faster than taking the risk again.
Kind regards,
Jaap
