Large file memory management

From our internal Engineering Forum: Large file memory management I have a user who loads a large PKG file (60-70 meg range). We had the memory limit set to 500 Megs but soon found that wasn't quite enough as the model seems to take around 450 megs just from loading it in. The system is a newer x2100 and so we can set the memory limit higher but I recall there being another setting? Something like an environment variable maybe, that might help with these larger files? Ring a bell to anyone??

re: Large file memory management

Ron,

with recent versions of OSDM, you should not even have to use memory-limit since it is set automatically during startup to a value which makes sure that all available memory in the system can be used.

You can, of course, still use memory-limit configure the maximum memory consumption yourself. In ancient versions of OSDM, there indeed used to be an environment variable which could be used to configure a special virtual memory allocation setting (Windows platform only). Using that environment variable in these days, however, is actually counterproductive and will do more harm than anything.

Expansion factors in the range of 2-10 are not unusual when loading package files. We are continually working on improving memory efficiency in new releases. As an example, we implemented automatic memory defragmentation in OSDM 2002+.

Sometimes, it helps to split up large package files into several packages, one for each major subassembly. There are probably other potentially useful hints, depending on the model in question, so maybe our support folks can help here, too, if you submit the model to them.

Hope this helps,

Claus

re: Large file memory management

Hi Claus, Of course it helps! Thanks very much for the authoritative reply. (It's good to hear from you again!) We've cross-posted your answer to our internal Engineering Forum for all to see within Agilent.
