The pref. dir option in Advanced Sweep is the way to do this, so you were on the right track. I made the pref. dir the axial direction of the conical spring.

I deal with people on a regular basis who use a default OSDM geometric resolution of 0.001 mm and 0.0001 mm. I have not seen any Modeling problems that can be attributed to this lower resolution.
