basketball bumps

Simple description of what I'm trying to do would be to pattern the bumps on a basketball - big sphere with a bunch of little spheres embedded around it. One row of spheres is fine using the radial pattern, but then I am defining the start of each row manually. So I'm looking for spherical patterning, but to compound the problem, it's not really a sphere, it's the outward facing face of a torus (the area you'd likely grab when you pick up a doughnut). To compound the problem even more, I turned a spline to create the toroid, rather than turning a circle.

Any ideas?

you had to ask an easy one didn't you? What is the cross sectional shape. Is it circular?

I did an angular pull profile of a spline around an axis. I've highlighted the area I'm trying to bump.

Incidentally it's somewhat academic at this point (at least until I need to change the profile), since I manually placed the starting bumps, then did a radial pattern of those bumps.

That is probably how I would have done it.
