View Full Version : Sheet Metal: Can it "recognize" bends?

A user asked me this today, saying he knew how to take a flat part and use Sheet Metal to make bends, but was there a way to start with a "bent" model and have it unfold it? I suppose this would be the equivalent of a "Recognize Bend" command, much like OSD Modeling has a "Recognize Blend" command.

Hi,

This is what you do to convert a "normal" model into a Sheet Metal-part:

- choose Settings > Attach > Material to attach an approprite material type to the part (the thickness should match!)
- use Settings > Attach > Bend to attach bend features to the bends (you can select all bends in one operation). It's wise to ensure the bend radius should match the bend radius of the process.

If the bend process is not very critical, you could even skip the Attach Bend action, and Sheet Metal will use a default ("fall back strategy") Bend Relief value for the bends.

That's it!

Jaap

Thanks Jaap. I will try it out early next week.

Hi,

when you do 'attach bend' as described by jaap,
just select all faces in model.
The function will take care of those faces which
can not be bend faces.
This way you don't have to select all possible
bend faces individually.
