Creating a picklist without associating an attribute

Hi I would like to create a picklist which changes dynamically. For such a picklist I had to make use of an edit-field where I had to set an attribute name in the template. But our requirement is such that we do not want to associate a database attribute with this edit field. If we are not using an attribute ,we are not able to see the picklist or even edit the edit field. (In Brief: We would like to create a picklist, without associating an attribute to its edit field.) Can any one suggest how to do it? Thanks in Advance Magbul
