When you input a \ and a three digit number such as
\100 OSDM returns a letter?? Is there any way to turn this fucntionality off?

Just a guess, but have you tried two slashes such as "\\100"? Since I don't know where you are typing these character I don't know how to test it, but in LISP the backslash is a special character and to get one in a string you usually need to enter two.
