View Full Version : Delete part from Model Manager database

We are trying out Model Manager to see how it works in our system. One thing I haven't figured out how to do yet is to delete a model from the database.
I corrected the name of a part (by changing the contents ID) and when I saved, instead of hitting "overwrite" for the assembly, I mistakenly left it at "new version". Therefore, an additional version was created unintentionally.
I want to delete version 1 of the assembly, and delete the part model file that was named incorrectly. But I can't seem to find any documentation in "Help" that even talks about deleting files.
Thanks in advance for any input.
(I'm using OSD v11.60 & MM v11.61 on W2K)

Here is the reply I received from CoCreate Support:
"There currently is no mechanism for deleting parts or documents
in Model Manager or Drawing Manager. You have to use either
the Design Data Management or classic admin user interfaces to
perform the deletes instead. This is not documented for Model
Manager, because it is not currently Model Manager funcitonality.
Instead, please refer to the other on-line manuals, such as the
Desktop User Reference Manual or Using OneSpace Manager."

With the September release of Designer Modeling, the integrated add-on Model Manager has a Delete Wizard that can select multiple items at one time for deletion. Once the items are selected, the wizard analysis them for permissions and relationships. At this point it can go two ways: if there is a conflict, the specific item in question is unselected for deletion, if there are no conflicts the delete wizard unlinks the items for you and removes them from the database. See the attached GIF image for the screenshot of a delete summary result. The image shows that one drawing can have many links and with the help of the wizard, the deletion was simple and informative.

Deleting things in Work Manager is a pain in the butt.
You can, in fact, delete both parts and documents in Work Manager, using the little trashcan icon.
BUT - if the document has been referenced by other people or other assemblies, you cannot delete the document. This can make for a real nightmare, and you have to use the "classic" interface and run cryptic queries in order to find out who the "parents" of the document are.
Before you can delete the document, you must pull up every assembly that references the document, remove the document to be deleted, and re-save the assembly. You must also remove the document from any and all packets that it may be residing in. So if every person in your company has referenced document "X" into their folders, it has to be removed from all of those folders before it can be deleted. I put in a call about this, but it was told that this is "by design".
I could understand having to go remove the item from any assemblies that use the item, but having to go remove the item from everyone's packets is crazy.

Your right... it was a pain in the butt to delete objects in the classic WorkManager: Desktop or Design Data Management.
Model Manager and Drawing Manager don't use the classic interfaces for deletion. The Delete Wizard is an improved process to delete and unlink objects within the database, especially when you have the situation of removing items for other people's packet. Permissions and normal restrictions still exist for database protection. Overall, we are very happy with the new efficiency of deleting an item in this 2004 September release.

I thought I deleted some models from model manager but when I tried to put the revised ones back in model manager it said they were still in the database.

You may have deleted the model (which is a 3D Data file in the database), but not the respective Masterdata.
What is Masterdata? In CoCreate OneSpace Model Manager and Drawing Manager, Masterdata is what organizes and tracks your model, drawing and non-engineering files (product design data). Most importantly, your Bill of Materials (BOM) specifically uses Masterdata when exporting to Excel, HTML, CSV or an Annotation drawing. The benefit to Masterdata is that it allows you to have multiple part attributes, like material, associated to the same 3D Data file. This way, as an example, you can have your Black iPod and your White iPod BOM's in the database but only have to track one associated 3D CAD assembly. See attached image (Steel and Brass).
How is Masterdata created? When you save a new part or assembly from CoCreate OneSpace Modeling to OneSpace Model Manager, a new respective Masterdata is created in the database and is automatically associated with the 3D Data file (part or assembly). Even when you save an eDrawings or a PDF from OneSpace Modeling, those files are automatically associated to their respective Masterdata. See attached image (3D, 2D, eDrawings and PDF).

Therefore, if you want to completely remove any reference of that part from the OneSpace Model Manager database, you must delete the model's 3D Data file as well as its associated Masterdata. To do this, use Search, find and expand the Masterdata, and select both objects using the Delete Wizard.
