We have three different groups that use SD. But, we all share one directory since we use so many common parts. Now the directory is huge (over 5,000 files). We want to create a separate directory for each group. Any ideas on the best way to transfer the files from one place to another without messing up assembly structure etc.

Have you heard of Workmanager? it was a PDM(Product Data Management) system, it has a classification module. I think that workmanager can solve the your problems. if you has insterting, please contact the hppt://www.cocreate.com. Thank you.

Our company is not prepared to take on the task of implementing workmanager. I was thinking more along the lines of easy ways to load assemblies, change direcotories and save all the information. I'd like to keep the same file names. But, when I change directories and do a Save 3D Data command, the file names default to the part name. Also, SD tries to save all the shared parts. Anyone else, have a suggestion?

Sorry for the late reply - I just discovered this site. We use a "working directory" such as /projects. Once a part/assy was completed it was moved to it's "approved" directory (ex: /components). These "approved" directories need to be included in the SEARCH DIRECTORIES list. You need to make sure everyone adheres to the process. It's a pain. We have a Workmanager demo scheduled in two days for this very reason.
