Default plot scale

Can anyone tell me how to reset the default plot scale from "fit" to "factor"? I also wonder who's bright idea it was to have it as "fit" in the first place. It is very annoying to have to go in every time and select paper size and factor for each plot. Is there a way to have it remember the last settings used?
